People’s bike. Renmin square, Chengdu, China.

Back from my second trip in China!

Amongst the few words I start to recognize (in pinyin, I barely recognize any Chinese character), Renmin — people — is a fairly common one in China. It’s on the banknotes (Yuan is also known as Renmibi), and in every city or village, there’s a Renmin square/street/avenue/… I got there on my first day in China this year, after a random stroll through the city. Weird feeling to get to be welcome by a crushing statue of Mao, but I suppose it sets the mood. For those who are curious, the red banner is here to inform the country is celebrating the 19th communist party congress according to my automatic phone translator. The latter also added it was “held vertical”(?).

Bikes are now really common, as I’ve seen free bike services in all major cities I’ve been to. I guess there’s a strong incentive to use this kind of transport, as China faces pollution problems. Along with the bikes, subway lines are constructed at a tremendous rate (more than 350km of metro lines are currently being built for Chengdu alone (!)). Well, China is building everything so fast that tourist guides can’t keep up…

So, anyway, I’ll post some of my picture’s trip in the next weeks, before going back to a normal publishing rate 🙂
