Looking at portals. Ilya & Emilia Kabakov “l’étrange cité”, in the Grand Palais, Paris. The previous editions of Monumenta were pretty nice (Anish Kapoor’s Leviathan in 2011 and Daniel Buren’s Excentrique(s) in 2012), so we wanted to see this one as well. This year’s edition was actually pretty deceptive. From “Monumenta”, it keeps only the name. The Grand Palais’s neva is BIG, and the point of the event is to fill the whole place with one BIG piece of art. The “weird city” the 2 artists built looked more or less like a trick to display various pieces of art they completed long before this exhibition; even though the latter are not bad (far from it, some pieces are indeed very nice). Oh well, let’s hope 2015 will be better!
